Winnie Mandela calls on South Africa to stand behind Caster Semenya after claims the gender-row runner is a hermaphrodite

The former wife of Nelson Mandela has called on all of South Africa to stand behind gender-row athlete Caster Semenya after claims the 800m champion runner is a hermaphrodite.
Winnie Mandela spoke out as Caster’s mother Dorcus reacted with fury to the report that her daughter has both male and female sex organs, but no womb or ovaries.
The Sydney Daily Telegraph published the details yesterday after reportedly speaking to a source close to the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).
Shock claims: Caster Semenya celebrates her 800m victory in Berlin last month amid an international row over whether she is a man or a woman
It claimed Caster has three times more testosterone than a normal female and will be advised to have an operation because her condition carries grave health risks.
It added that she has internal testes – male sexual organs which produce testosterone and which in turn produce muscle bulk, body hair and a deep voice.
The official results of the tests have not yet been released and IAAF spokesman Nick Davies has warned the claims in the Australian media should be ‘treated with caution’.
Support: Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has called for South Africa to rally around the athlete
The treatment of Caster has become a political cause in her home country, where some have accused athletics bosses of racism.
Yesterday African National Congress MP Winnie Madikizela-Mandela called for the country to rally around their athlete.
Mrs Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of Nelson Mandela, said: ‘I am extremely hurt by what I am hearing. The poor innocent child is a victim of all of this and it is not of her making.’
Speaking to the Star, she added: ‘I think it is the responsibility of South Africa to rally behind this child and tell the rest of the world she remains the hero she is an no one will take that away from her.
‘It is not her fault and I do not understand how anyone can blame this child for a biological problem that is not of her making.’
Mrs Madikizela-Mandela said if the claims about Caster were true, then the runner was learning she was a hermaphrodite for the first time.
She added: ‘There is nothing wrong with being a hermaphrodite. It is God’s creation. She is God’s child.
‘She did not make herself. God decided to make her that way and that can’t be held against her.
‘How on earth will a child from Limpopo have known that?’
During a phone interview with South Africa’s Star newspaper, a furious Mrs Semenya demanded: ‘What do you want from me, people? What do you want me to do?
‘I don’t even want to talk about that. What do they want me to do, change my daughter’s gender?
‘Firstly they did not even consult us as parents. They must never involve us in this thing because they acted like thieves.

‘They did whatever they wanted to do with our child without informing us first.’
Mr Davies said: ‘The statements in the Australian press should be treated with caution as they are not official statements by the IAAF.
‘We have received the results from Germany, but they now need to be examined by a group of experts and we will not be in a position to speak to the athlete about them for at least a few weeks.
‘After that, depending on the results, we will meet privately with the athlete to discuss further action.’
