Driver makes off with 11 million euros from his security van

In Lyon yesterday a security van driver drove off while his two colleagues were out of the van.  The van

was found several hours later, with no money on board.  It is estimated that the driver, who has not been named, took 11 million euros. The police theory is that he planned this disappearance very carfully.  There are no signs of a struggle and the van was neatly parked

Audacious or plain dumb? Security driver steals van worth 11 million

by Mort on Nov.06, 2009, under News, Weird stuff

I saw this article in The Times and thought it was such an odd little story that it would be perfect for a dull Friday afternoon.

The piece looks at the robbery of a French bank security van, the twist being that it appears it was the security firm’s own driver who was responsible for the heist. You’ve got to think that the man has to have balls the size of water melons, be really desperate, or be a few scones short of a picnic to try something so brazen.
Apparently his plan was so audacious (i.e. stupid) that the French police were originally working on the theory that he’d been kidnapped, along with the van, by a gang of robbers, or that someone close to him was being held captive by a gang in order to ensure his co-operation. However, it appears that this isn’t the case, and having visited the chap’s home, to find it pretty much cleaned out, and checked on his bank accounts, which have all been emptied recently, the French Police have come to the conclusion that the driver took off with the van, and the 11 million Euros it contained, of his own free will!

The driver had obviously planned his heist quite carefully, not only had he tied up loose ends, ready to dissappear, but he’d also done his homework well enough to be able to disable the van’s tracking system, and get the money out of the van’s armoured vault; A job which normally requires two people co-operating. Another thing which points at him having accomplises is the sheer amount of money he managed to shift, 11 million in notes has got to make for a fair old stack of paper! Even though the security van was abandoned in a quiet side street you’d still think that someone shifting the contents of a bank securitry van into some other vehicle (maybe he’d planned ahead and arranged van rental?) would draw attention, but as of yet the French Police haven’t mentioned witnesses coming forward.

So is the guy going to get away with it? On one hand it seems like such a stupid plan that it has to fail, but the guy’s obviously planned fairly well. The police don’t appear to have got him yet, despite knowing his identity, & although the French borders are being watched for him, you’d think anyone who had planned such an audacious robbery would have thought about where they were going to go in the longer term, and how they were going to get there.
One thing’s for sure, if the French Police don’t manage to catch this guy pretty soon, they’ll end up looking a little more like Inspector Clouseau than they’d like:

French police are hunting for the driver of a security van who has vanished along with the vehicle’s contents – €11 million (£10 million) in cash.

The country’s biggest cash robbery in recent years took place silently and without violence when Tony Musulin, 39, drove away from the branch of the Banque de France in central Lyons yesterday while his two colleagues were inside the building.

Police found the empty vehicle, which belongs to the Swedish security firm Loomis, two hours later parked neatly in a side street in a suburb of the city. Its satellite tracking system and telephone link had been switched off and its contents, about 40 large sacks of banknotes, were missing.

Police initially suspected that robbers may have taken the driver or members of his family hostage. However, they found signs that Mr Musulin had planned his heist carefully.

"We went to search this lad’s home and were surprised to discover a flat that was almost unoccupied. It was cleaned up as if he had prepared his flight," Xavier Richaud, the Lyons prosecutor, said. "Of course we suspect the driver."

The suspect was unmarried and had no children, he said.

One of Mr Musulin’s colleagues told Franci Info radio that he was "slightly odd, always griping and complaining" about being badly paid. "He said that sooner or later the bosses are going to pay for this," said the colleague, who was not named.

Mr Musulin, who had worked for Loomis for a decade, had recently emptied his bank accounts, police said. His picture was being distributed to frontiers and airports. Lyons is a short drive from Switzerland and the Italian and German frontiers are not far.

Police are trying to find out if Mr Musulin, who had no criminal record, had accomplices inside or outside the firm he worked for. "He had to move a heavy load of cash so it’s likely others were involved," said a local police officer.

One of the puzzles is how he opened the doors and sophisticated security locks on the armoured van, because at least two employees are usually required for the procedure.

Loomis and the police would not say whether the notes were new or old or easily traceable or whether their containers had been protected by devices which stain them with indelible dye in the event of robbery.

The slick style of the non-violent robbery prompted admiration from radio comedians this morning. "Salut l’artiste!" was a common comment from readers on internet news sites.

Recent robberies of armoured vans in France have always been violent, with thieves sometimes using military weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades.

In September 2007, a dozen men with heavy weapons used explosives to hold up a van and steal €10 million. They were said to have had accomplices in the security firm. In August last year, three men forced an van guard to hand over €7 million by taking his family hostage.
